Duties & Responsibilities
The Emergency Care Assistant (ECA) will practice as clinical assistants within the emergency medical care and rescue environment thereby replacing the Basic Ambulance Assistant Course as the entry qualification into the emergency medical services. This position is an entry-level qualification and recognises the key competencies required of Emergency Care Assistants (ECAs) who will work under the guidance of Emergency Care Technicians, Emergency Care Practitioners and Medical Officers in a variety of contexts. In general, the Emergency Care Assistant will provide a supportive service within the pre-hospital context.
Ensures operational readiness for emergency calls
Administers patient care in line with the ECA scope of practice
Report near misses, slips and adverse events
Requirements
Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care is essential
American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers serves as an advantage
1-year operational experience as an Emergency Care Assistant
A valid drivers’ license and valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) (Requirement for Operations shifts. If only going to work events, no PrDP required)
Required job skills and knowledge:
Knowledge and application of best practice
Knowledge of the EMS environment
English language skills (verbal and written)
Familiar with facilities, travel routes, and geographical area
Knowledge and application of HPCSA guidelines and scope of practice
Working knowledge and experience of Patient Report Forms
Upholds high ethical and professional standards
Follows instructions and adheres to procedures
Works accurately and thoroughly by attending to detail
Responds constructively to pressure and perseveres through challenges
Collaborates with and supports colleagues in order to achieve shared goals
Strives to identify and deliver on clients' needs and a continued focus on the client experience
